Milk paint is a versatile, eco-friendly option made from natural ingredients like milk protein (casein), lime, and pigments. It’s non-toxic and environmentally safe, perfect for various projects. Here are key tips for using milk paint:

Preparation: Milk paint adheres best to porous surfaces without primer. For non-porous surfaces, like painted or varnished furniture, lightly sand and use our bonding agent called Extra Bond for proper adhesion.

Mixing: Our milk paint is in powder form, milk paint must be mixed with distilled water. Use a 1:1 ratio of distilled water to powder. Mix small batches as needed since it has a limited shelf life once prepared. If adding Extra Bond, mix the powder and water first then add in the Extra Bond. For example, I start with a 1/2 cup of water to 1/2 cup of milk paint powder. I shake it and let sit for about 10 mins. Once the powder is completely mixed, I add in almost a 1/2 cup of Extra Bond, maybe a little less. If you add too much Extra Bond it can make the paint too thin.

Application: Apply with a brush, roller, or sprayer. Milk paint dries quickly, so work efficiently. Use multiple thin coats, letting each dry before adding the next. We find application works best using a brush.

Distressing: To achieve a distressed or antique look, lightly sand edges or surfaces after the paint dries.

Sealing: Milk paint dries matte and needs sealing for durability. Protect the surface with our wax, hemp oil, or water-based polyurethane.

Cleaning and Storage: Clean tools promptly with warm water. Store unused powder in a cool, dry place to prolong its shelf life.
